FAQ
You will find here frequently asked questions:
Booking process
As soon as you have accepted our terms and conditions of travel in the booking process on our online portal and clicked on the button “Book now”, a binding booking exists.
Yes.
The booking documents will be provided by e-mail or in the personal customer portal after settlement of the final payment. They include the booking confirmation, the details of the rental and all vouchers.
Upon completion of the booking, a deposit of max. 100 euros is due immediately, to be paid via PayPal or credit card. If you choose a credit card as payment method, the deposit will be collected only after the service has been confirmed as OK. Otherwise, the authorization will expire automatically after 7 days. If you choose PayPal, the amount will be debited directly. The difference between 100 € and 15% of the booking amount is due 7 days after booking and is called interim payment. This is payable by credit card.
The interim payment is also possible in several partial payments of at least 500 euros, whereby the complete down payment amount must be paid within at least 7 days. The final payment is usually due 30 days before departure and can be made by credit card or bank transfer. Partial payment in increments of 500 euros can also be made for the final payment.
If the pick-up of the vehicle takes place within 30 days of a successful booking, the full price of the hire will be due at the end of the booking process so that the booking can be forwarded to the hire company.
A voucher is a monetary coupon that can be redeemed on site at our partners. To do so, please present it in printed form. The voucher can be downloaded in the personal customer portal.
We cannot guarantee the availability of all motorhomes. If the vehicle you selected cannot be confirmed by the hire company, CU | Camper will offer you alternative vehicles. If these are not suitable for you, the booking will be cancelled. In this case, the full amount paid will be refunded to your account.
1. The customer is informed that a general legal right of withdrawal does not exist for rental contracts – unlike for package travel contracts. Furthermore, it is pointed out that a statutory right of withdrawal does not exist. We point out with reference to the obligation according to Art. 246a § 1 Abs.3 Nr. 1 EGBGB (Introductory Law to the German Civil Code) that in particular there is no right of withdrawal for distance contracts, because the exception of § 312g Abs. 2 Nr. 9 BGB (motor vehicle rental) applies.
2. Some of the motorhome providers grant a contractual right of withdrawal (cancellation). If this is offered, it is mentioned in the special rental conditions. CU Camper points out that in case of cancellation, however, usually only a percentage of the rental price (depending on the time of cancellation) is waived and the remaining amount is retained as a cancellation fee by the motorhome rental company. Details are specified in the rental conditions of the respective motorhome rental company. The customer is free at any time to prove that no damage was incurred or that the damage was less than the cancellation fee. In case of cancellation you will not pay any extra fees for the processing by CU | Camper. Thus, we only pass on to you the costs that would also be incurred by the rental company through a direct booking.
3. CU Camper points out the following: A cancellation is only valid when we have received it. We will confirm the cancellation to the customer in writing (by e-mail) within 7 working days after receipt of the cancellation. If the customer has not received a confirmation within this period, he is obliged to ask CU Camper about the receipt of the cancellation. The customer is obliged to send the cancellation request in writing (by e-mail). As a matter of principle, the time of receipt by the camper provider is decisive as the right of cancellation is granted by the camper provider. For this purpose, CU Camper will forward the customer’s cancellation declaration to the motorhome provider upon receipt. However, in order to enable forwarding, the receipt during business hours (Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. German time outside public holidays) at CU Camper is required first. If the receipt takes place outside the business hours, the time of receipt shall be deemed to be 9 a.m. of the next business day. Regarding the time of receipt at the camper provider, it should be taken into account that it is only during the operating hours of the camper provider, which may be located in a different time zone. Therefore, it is recommended to send the cancellation with a reasonable lead time. To cover the risk of cancellation, the conclusion of a travel cancellation insurance should be considered.
4. There is no right to rebooking. It is rather a discretionary decision of the respective motorhome provider. Up to 14 days before the actual pick-up date, CU Camper will, however, upon request of the customer, try to find out the possibility of a rebooking with the respective motorhome provider and inform the customer first about the conditions of a rebooking (especially possible fees and additional payments). If the customer agrees to the individual conditions for rebooking, this constitutes an offer to change the contract. If CU Camper accepts this, a new booking confirmation and a new voucher will be sent to the customer by e-mail. In addition, a new/changed invoice will be sent. Regarding the payment to be made then, section 5 of the GTC of travel applies.
A rebooking or cancellation of an already booked vehicle must be made in writing via direct contact to the customer service of CU | Camper. To do so, please contact the customer service by e-mail using [email protected].
Motorhome bookings with CU | Camper can be made no later than five days before the planned pick-up. As bookings are often made directly in the partner systems, these short-term bookings are possible. However, you should allow enough time to finalise the booking and payment process. Especially in New Zealand, Australia and North America, this can be delayed by 1-2 days due to the time difference. The complete booking documents will only be sent after this.
Both in the list of results and in the detailed view of the motorhome you will find information on availability.
When searching for motorhomes via CU | Camper, the availability of the vehicles is displayed directly in a traffic light system (“available”, “on request” and “unavailable”), so that you know even before booking whether the vehicle you want can be confirmed immediately or must first be requested.
We use different availability sources for this:
1.) Almost all rental companies give us irregular, weekly or even daily new updates, which are automatically loaded into our system. We have an agreement with all partners that we can send a confirmation directly to our customers when the status is “available”.
2) With many rental companies (Road Bear, El Monte, Apollo, Fraserway, Four Seasons etc.) we are directly connected to the systems of the partners via interfaces. So every search on the website will query the availability in the system of the partners.
Due to these different sources, the displayed availabilities on our website are reliable for the moment of the query. We cannot give a guarantee that, for example, one hour after the time of booking the desired vehicle is still available, as this may have changed in the meantime.
If the vehicle is still available at the time of booking, you will receive a final confirmation for your vehicle within seconds, without us having to consult with our partner.
On the CU | Camper website, you can search for motorhomes for the location and dates of your choice. After a search query, you can compare different vehicles, add extra accessories (add-ons) and book. Once you have made your booking, you will be taken to the deposit page to pay the deposit for your booking. If the vehicle you have booked is available, you will then receive all further information about the remaining payment. If the booked vehicle is “on request”, you will be informed within a few working days of paying the deposit whether your booking has been confirmed by the hire company. If this is not the case, you will receive an alternative offer from CU | Camper, which you can accept or reject.
If a motorhome is shown as “on request” on the CU | Camper website, this vehicle can be booked. After booking, the availability of the vehicle selected is checked by the rental company’s fleet managers on site. This process can take one to two working days depending on the country. If the vehicle is confirmed, the booking can be finalised as requested. If the vehicle cannot be confirmed, you will receive an alternative offer from CU | Camper. You can accept or reject this offer. In the event of rejection, you will receive a full refund of the deposit.
You can book a motorhome with CU | Camper up to five days before you pick up your vehicle.
Camping and pitches
In many countries there are severe restrictions or even bans on wild camping – for example in North America.
Before traveling to the respective country of your choice, please inform yourself about the topic on official tourism websites.
If a country, such as New Zealand, allows wild camping, vehicles should have, among other things, a toilet and water tanks and be officially certified as self-contained. Whether a motorhome rental company offers such vehicles, you can find out on the website of the respective rental company.
The complete connection of the camper to fresh water and electricity. A full hook-up is not available at all campgrounds. The term is used primarily in North America.
The term “dumping” refers to the draining of dirty water at a designated station.
Campground fees vary significantly by region, location, amenities and season. State campsites are usually a little cheaper than private campsites, but often less extensively equipped. They cost from about 30 to 40 euros per night, on private campsites you can stay from about 50 euros.
Prices often depend on the location and equipment of the campsite.
Campsites cannot be booked via the CU | Camper website.

Part of our commitment to providing good customer support is our CU | Camper Low price guarantee. If you find a motorhome rental on another platform that is comparable in all respects, you can forward it to the CU | Camper Customer Care team: [email protected] – We will then check whether we can offer you the rental at the same price.
It is important to note that all services must be identical: travel period, station, hire company, vehicle model, insurance services and any add-ons / additional services listed.
We reserve the right not to match a cheaper offer. The CU | Low price guarantee is not valid for bookings that have already been made and whose services may subsequently be cheaper.
Planning the trip
Yes, most rental companies have a minimum rental period of 7 days. With some rental companies (e.g. McRent) this can vary depending on the season and be up to 14 days. Basically, you will only be shown suitable vehicles for your specified travel time, for which the minimum rental period matches the rental period you requested.
It is not possible/permitted to pick up the motorhome on the day of arrival in the USA and Canada. A hotel should be booked there for the first night before pick-up. Many hire companies offer a free transfer between the hire station and the hotel you have booked. In Europe, South Africa, Namibia, Australia and New Zealand, however, pick-up on the day of arrival is possible.
Yes, it does. In general, the name of the main driver given must always match the name on the credit card. Another little tip: Always have your credit card PIN with you, because a signature may not be sufficient at some pickup stations.
No. The rental conditions differ per hire company, as well as hire station. You can view and download the current rental conditions here.
With most hire companies, one-way rentals are possible without any problems. The only exception is McRent in Europe, where this is not possible.
From experience, the majority of one-way rentals are ‘on request’ and require reconfirmation by the hire company.
As a rule, the minimum age is 21 years. Some hire companies have additional special conditions for tenants under 25 years. In Australia and New Zealand, some hire companies allow rentals from the age of 18 (as long as the drivers have held a driver’s license for at least 6 months).
Further details can be found in the local rental conditions. For most vehicles in Europe, the minimum age of the renter is 21 years. An exception are the vehicles of the Premium Group; here the minimum age is 25 years.
Not all motorhomes have three-point seat belts (this applies mainly in North America, Australia, New Zealand and southern Africa). However, so-called tether anchors are often available, with which a child seat can be attached. Please check yourself whether the infant carrier, child seat or booster seat can be securely fastened with a three-point belt, with a tether anchor or even just with a lap belt. For further information, you may contact us via [email protected].
For information on entry requirements of the respective country, please visit the websites of the official responsible authorities.
-Tolls for certain road sections.
-Meals
-Entrance fees to attractions and national parks.
-Fees for motorhome sites at campgrounds.
-Gasoline
Some hire companies impose restrictions mostly because of dangerous road conditions or non-public roads. For example, a trip to Death Valley is not allowed for RVs in the summer. Route prohibitions can be found in the rental conditions and additional information of your hire company.
In North America, you must be at least 21 years old and have a valid, national passenger car driver’s license. In addition, an international driver’s license is generally recommended. Moreover, an international driver’s license is strongly recommended.
In Australia and New Zealand, some hire companies allow rentals from the age of 18 (provided you have had your driver’s license for at least six months). Here you need an international driver’s license or a certified translation of the national driver’s license. Without an international driver’s license or a certified translation, it is not possible to pick up the vehicle.
For Europe, you only need a Class III or Class B driver’s license, which you have held for at least one year. Exception is the premium group of McRent, which may only be driven by persons who have been in possession of a driving license of class III or class C/C1 for at least 3 years. This is due to the fact that these vehicles have a weight of over 3.5t.
In South Africa and Namibia you should bring along an international driving license.
Many motorhome hire companies offer unlimited mileage packages. If this is not the case, plan the stops on your trip before booking and use a route planner (such as ‘Google Maps’) to calculate the distance. Then select the mileage package that best suits your plans in the vehicle configuration.
you will find here the possibility to download the rental conditions.
You can also download the current rental conditions for all destinations by jumping to the “Rental company” section on the detailed view of the vehicle. There you can read more about the rental company and the station and download the rental conditions with one click.
The following information can be found in the rental conditions:
-Opening hours and address of the rental station (including holidays).
-Details about pick-up and drop-off of the motorhomes.
-Costs for possible add-ons and additional services.
-Insurance conditions.
-Amount of the deposit to be paid at pick-up.
-Route restrictions and surcharges.
Pick up and drop off of the motorhome
The motorhome can be taken over during the normal opening hours of the rental station, usually from 13:00. Exceptions are possible. The opening hours vary depending on the station and rental company, on Sundays and holidays they are usually closed. After arrival in North America, it is recommended to make an appointment by phone with the rental company for the next day.
A special feature in North America: Here it is prohibited to take over the motorhome on the day of arrival after a long-haul flight. In addition, it is possible with some rental companies to book an early pick-up / late return. This is associated with additional costs, which you can see in the configuration of the respective vehicle / rental company. The drop-off of the motorhome usually takes place between 8:00 and 10:30, also here the times vary depending on the station and rental company.
In Europe, New Zealand, Australia and Southern Africa, the opening hours for the pick-up and drop-off of the motorhome also apply. However, at some pick-up stations the motorhome can only be dropped off in the morning and picked up in the afternoon.
The late return will result in additional costs, which you will settle directly with the rental company. We advise to spend the last night not far from the place of return.
If you have any questions, please contact the rental company directly. You will receive the contact details with your travel documents. Many rental companies also offer a German service, sometimes even around the clock.
Upon pickup, you will also receive an emergency number from the rental station, where you can reach the rental company 24/7.
The amount of the deposit varies from company to company. You can find it in the respective rental conditions of the respective rental company.
In Australia and New Zealand, we recommend booking the All Inclusive Package or Value Pack, which significantly reduces the deposit to be paid.
Many rental companies in North America offer transfers from selected hotels, usually near the airport. Which hotels these are and what the conditions for the transfer are, you can find out at CU | Camper. In all other travel countries, travel to the rental station must be organized partly by yourself. For detailed information, please refer to the rental conditions.
Depending on your mobile phone provider, different fees may apply for using mobile Internet. Therefore, find out about your options before you start your trip.
To use mobile internet, you can use a so-called eSIM: An eSIM is an electronic SIM card that is permanently installed in many newer mobile devices and is used to identify the user.
Compared to a normal SIM card, the eSIM is transferred digitally to your smartphone and activated via a QR code, so you can start making calls straight away.
You can find access to eSIMs worldwide with providers such as “Airalo”. This eSIM shop offers digital SIM cards from over 200 countries and regions, which you can use to download and install a digital data package. This means you are connected anywhere in the world from the very first second.
After searching on the CU | Camper website, you can see in the respective vehicle details view which services are included in the booking and which services incur additional costs. This can vary from country to country and from hire company to hire company. All services that incur additional costs are clearly marked with the respective prices.
There is no mileage limit when booking a motorhome via CU | Camper. However, hire companies may charge separate fees for different mileage packages.
On your first trip after picking up the motorhome, you should familiarise yourself with the vehicle’s handling characteristics in as quiet an area as possible. It is also a good idea to do some initial shopping for the coming days of your trip so that you can be self-sufficient in the motorhome.
For some bookings (e.g. ferries or campsites), the motorhome’s registration number is requested in advance. The rental company cannot provide you with this information before your trip. Therefore, please enter “TBA” in the registration number field for now and complete the information after you have picked up the vehicle.
When booking a motorhome via CU | Camper, the rental conditions of the respective hire company determine whether you are permitted to travel to other countries with the vehicle – and if so, to which ones.
Pick-up and drop-off of the motorhome
The rented motorhome can be picked up during the normal opening hours of the hire station, usually from 1 p.m. Exceptions are possible. Opening hours vary depending on the station and hire company, and they are usually closed on Sundays and public holidays. It is recommended that you call the rental company after arriving in North America to arrange a pick-up time for the next day. If the pick-up time is not clarified with the rental company beforehand, you may have to wait until the vehicle is handed over to you.
A special feature in North America: Here, it is not permitted to pick up the motorhome on the day of arrival after a long-haul flight. In addition, some hire companies offer the option of booking an early pick-up/late return. This involves additional costs, which you can view when configuring the respective vehicle/hire company. The motorhome is usually dropped off between 8:00 and 10:30 a.m., although the times vary depending on the station and hire company.
In Europe, New Zealand, Australia and southern Africa, the opening hours of the stations also apply for picking up and dropping off the motorhome. However, at some pick-up stations, the motorhome can only be dropped off in the morning and picked up in the afternoon.
Dropping off a motorhome late to the hire company will result in additional costs, which you will have to settle directly with the hire company. We recommend spending the last night close to the drop-off location. You will find specific information in the rental company’s terms and conditions and in your final travel documents.
If you have any questions on site, please contact the hire company directly. You will receive their contact details with your travel documents.
When you pick up the vehicle, the hire station will also give you an emergency number that you can use to reach the hire company 24/7.
The amount of the deposit varies from hire company to hire company. You can find this information in the respective rental conditions of the relevant hire company.
In Australia and New Zealand, we recommend booking the All Inclusive Package or Value Pack, which significantly reduces the deposit required.
Many hire companies in North America offer transfers from selected hotels, usually near the airport. You can find out which hotels these are and what the conditions for the transfer are from CU | Camper. In all other travel countries, you may have to organise your own transport to the hire station. For detailed information, please refer to the rental conditions.
After booking a motorhome via CU | Camper, you will receive travel documents (voucher). Upon presentation of these and your personal identification documents, the vehicle will be handed over to you by the respective hire company. The hire company will provide you in advance with instructions on how to use the vehicle – in some cases via video or online. You can ask the hire company any questions you may have about the condition and functions of the vehicle. The times for picking up the motorhome are listed on your travel voucher.
The motorhome must be dropped off after the trip within a specified time frame. This information is also listed on the voucher. When you return the vehicle, the hire company’s employees will check it for any damage. It is recommended that you drop off the motorhome in a clean condition, at least swept clean.
Motorhomes
The model year of a camper presented on our website varies depending on the rental company and vehicle. When booking, you will find, if possible, a general indication of the model year of a vehicle. In addition, you can find more detailed information on our rental pages and in the vehicle selection under the item “Rental company”.
Essentially, all illustrations show the actual vehicle, but isolated differences are possible. The models, equipment, floor plans and dimensions may vary. Neither the local partner nor CU Travel GmbH & Co. KG assume liability for possible deviations. You can send your requests regarding vehicle plans or dimensions to our customer service team.
Most campers have a 12 volt battery. Campgrounds have a 110 volt electrical outlet, or 230 volts in Europe. Remember to bring adapters for your electrical devices if necessary.
Electronic devices, such as a smartphone, tablet or laptop can be charged via an adapter at the cigarette lighter or via the camper’s electrical system (if connected to the campground’s electrical system). The consumer battery in the vehicle is charged while driving, which ensures a power supply.
On the respective vehicle detail page you will find information on vehicle equipment and personal equipment, also called prep and kits. Simply click on the small “i”.
Some rental companies list the kitchen equipment separately from the personal equipment. If the kitchen equipment is not separately selectable when booking a motorhome, you can assume that it is already included in the personal equipment. All information about the vehicle equipment (prep, kits, kitchen equipment) comes from the rental companies themselves and not from CU | Camper.
During the months when temperatures drop below freezing (32° Fahrenheit or 0° Celsius), all vehicles in North America are winterized to protect the water/sewer lines from freezing. This means that the water lines are either completely drained (cannot be used), or the water has been replaced with antifreeze. Once you travel to warmer regions (temperatures must be above freezing), the water tanks can be used normally again. There are some vehicles from selected hire companies that have winterized vehicles with heated and insulated hoses and winter tires instead of all-season tires. Just ask our support team about this. You can get more information about this from the staff on site.
In the case of new car transfers, it is usually the case that the vehicles are handed over winterized. Here, too, you will receive more detailed information upon pick-up.
A slide-out is an electronically extendable element usually in the center section of a motorhome. Slide-outs can only be extended when the vehicle is stationary and provide a significantly larger interior space.
If a repair is necessary, you should always contact the hire company beforehand and discuss how to proceed. Often hire companies also work exclusively with local repair companies. As a rule, the hire company will cover the cost of the repair. When you pick up your vehicle, the hire station will provide you with an emergency number where you can reach the hire company 24/7.
The size of the vehicle should be chosen so that all passengers have enough space. It is recommended not to use the maximum occupancy of the motorhome. The respective maximum occupancy can be found in the vehicle descriptions on the website of CU | Camper.
Consumption depends primarily on the size of your motorhome. Secondarily on your driving style and load. You will find a guideline in the following table:
Campervans: from 14 liters/100 km
Truck Camper: from 16 liters/100 km
Van Conversion: from 21 liters/100 km
Motorhomes C 20, C 22: from 24 liters/100 km
Motorhomes C 25, C 27: from 27 liters/100 km
Motorhomes C 29, C 32: from 30 liters/100 km
Class A Motorhomes : from 33 liters/100 km
Vehicles from McRent in Europe are basically equipped with a new turbo diesel, which allows you to save quite a bit on fuel consumption.
When choosing a motorhome at CU | Camper, you can choose from a wide variety of vehicle types. These range from compact vans for two people to large motorhomes with slide-outs for up to 8 people. Depending on the size of your group, the duration of your trip and the region you are travelling to, you can choose the motorhome that suits you best. After searching on CU | Camper, you can use the description text, pictures and floor plan for all available vehicles to help you make your decision.
Payment process
Yes, a deposit of max. 100 euros is due immediately upon completion of the booking, to be paid via PayPal or credit card. The difference between 100 € and 15% of the booking amount is due 7 days after booking and is called interim payment. This is payable by credit card. The interim payment amount can also be paid in installments of €500 each.
The total down payment amount must be paid in full within 7 days. The respective amount can be found in the confirmation of receipt / invoice, which will be sent to you automatically after booking.
For bookings that are transmitted ‘on request’, only an authorization of the amount takes place for the payment with the credit card. The amount will only be debited after the booking has been confirmed.
Check whether the card is still valid. If the amount of the payment exceeds the card’s credit limit, the card will also be declined. You can have your bank increase the credit limit.
Alternatively, you have the option of paying both the down payment and the final payment in installments of at least 500 euros each.
The down payment is possible by credit card (VISA, Euro-/ Mastercard) or PayPal. The interim and final payment can be settled by credit card or bank transfer.
You can find more information here.
You can click on the globe at the top right of the menu bar to choose between different foreign currencies. If you select a currency other than the Euro, please make sure you have a PayPal account as this is the only payment method we offer for payments in foreign currencies. There may also be price differences due to currency fluctuations.
The deposit for a motorhome booking is a maximum of €100 and is due immediately after booking. For last-minute bookings (less than 30 days before vehicle pick-up), the total amount must be paid.
Additional services and extras
As a rule, it is sufficient if the motorhome is handed over broom-clean. From the outside, the motorhome only needs to be washed before drop-off if it is very dirty.
Generators provide power to the RV (when the RV is not connected to a campground’s electrical system) and are available primarily in the United States. They can be charged by the hour or by the day. There is a charge of approximately $3-5 per hour of use and $5-15 per day (see local rental terms).
Bringing pets is allowed only by some hire companies. Details can be found in the local rental conditions.
The campers are usually not equipped with their own Internet access. However, many private campsites have free wi-fi access.
Camping equipment, or kits, in the U.S. and Canada includes all kitchen equipment as well as personal gear. This includes, for example, cookware, cleaning supplies, eating utensils, towels, bedding and more. Many rental companies also have additional special equipment such as camping furniture or toasters.
In Australia and New Zealand, the kits include sleeping equipment such as bedding and towels.
Please note that the “camping set” in Europe only includes a camping table and chairs depending on the number of persons.
Details about the content of these kits can be found on the respective vehicle page by clicking on the small “i”.
The mileage package indicates the cost per 500 kilometers / miles. When booking, individual packages for miles or kilometers can be booked.
Many hire companies alternatively offer packages for unlimited kilometers / miles.
In the U.S. and Canada, the prep fee includes the initial filling with propane gas and toilet chemicals, the connection hoses for fresh and waste water, and work or rubber gloves.
In Australia and New Zealand, the prep fee includes kitchen equipment such as dishes, cutlery, buckets, brooms and the like.
The prep fee is a mandatory service that must be paid at the latest when you pick up your motorhome.
Camping accessories
Camping chairs and camping tables can be booked with most hire companies for an additional fee.
Bicycles
Bicycles and bike racks can be booked with some hire companies. Since the racks must be pre-assembled, booking should always be done in advance.
GPS
As a rule, no navigation devices are built in. However, with many providers such a device can be booked as an extra.
Child seats
Not all models have the option of attaching a child seat / infant carrier. When booking via CU | Camper, use the option to filter for models with a child seat. In the detailed view of the extras that can be added, you will then find a note indicating whether it is a child seat or booster seat. Please also note any age restrictions for children traveling with you. You will find these in the rental conditions of the rental company. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact our customer service via [email protected]. In Europe, the child seat issue is somewhat easier, because here you can book both child seats and booster seats directly.
This is an additional fee charged on trips to Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Labrador. Details can be found in the local rental conditions.
