Experience Austria by motorhome
Those who enjoy being active in the fresh (mountain) air will find a huge range of activities on offer: Hiking, climbing, swimming, water sports, cycling tours and many other options are available in almost every region.
The Alps run through a large part of the country. Anyone exploring Austria in a motorhome will find a large number of high mountains, especially in the western regions. Some of them are almost four thousand metres high - and as many as one thousand mountain peaks reach more than three thousand metres. Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner, is without question an attractive holiday destination. It rises to around three thousand eight hundred metres. Alternatively, the Hohe Dachstein not far from Hallstatt is a multi-faceted destination for hikers and climbers. Not far from the German border and the Königssee, the Hochkönig is also a destination that offers a wide range of options for almost all visitors.
Even Austria experts will find it difficult to choose the most beautiful lakes in the country. So many bodies of water are situated in dreamlike locations. Lake Wolfgangsee, for example, not far from Salzburg, is a favourite destination for campers. Just a few kilometres further south, Lake Hallstatt is in no way inferior. Surrounded by high peaks and almost reminiscent of a Norwegian fjord, the lake meanders through a valley. Hallstatt itself is also a place worth seeing with its historic houses. The Mondsee and Attersee lakes are other attractive bodies of water in the region. The Krimml Waterfalls are truly spectacular. There, the masses of water make their way over almost three hundred and eighty metres.
The largest lake - even if only a small part of it lies on Austrian territory - is Lake Constance. This in turn is located at the north-westernmost point of Austria, on the border with Germany and Switzerland. In Tyrol, Lake Achensee is one of many destinations worth visiting.

Discover Austria in a motorhome
The country's larger lakes are generally lined with several campsites. And these campsites are essential for anyone visiting Austria in a motorhome. This is because wild camping is strictly prohibited throughout the country. However, there are more than enough campsites, most of which are attractively located. Directly on the shores of Lake Achensee in Tyrol, for example, 'Achensee Camping Schwarzenau' is a popular place to go. Even from the campsite you can enjoy a postcard-perfect mountain panorama. Almost seventy pitches and a good range of on-site services speak in favour of the site.
In the south of Hallstatt - just a few steps away from Lake Hallstatt - you will find the Klausner-Höll campsite. It is comparatively simply equipped, but impresses with its location. The water can be reached in two minutes on foot and the town centre in less than ten minutes. The view of the surrounding mountains is another advantage of the site.
There are several campsites for motorhome travellers around Lake Wolfgangsee. The 'Seecamping Primus' is located in the first row by the water. Far away from major roads and equipped with its own sandy beach, the site scores highly with many visitors. With almost sixty pitches, the site leaves virtually nothing to be desired.
You can easily book the right vehicle for your motorhome road trip through Austria via the CU | Camper website. This gives you the opportunity to compare different hire companies and vehicles in order to find the ideal vehicle for your requirements. For road trips in the summer months and holiday periods in particular, it is advisable to book early - this also applies to particularly popular campsites. Then nothing stands in the way of a varied tour through beautiful Austria.
We wish you a great journey.
