Campervan models at CU | Camper

Choosing the right vehicle comes down to where your itinerary takes you. Will you be staying at fully equipped campsites, or spending nights at more remote sites with only basic facilities? Are you heading off the beaten track, or sticking to wide open roads? Space and comfort matter just as much as route choice.

Compact campervans

Compact and particularly manoeuvrable campervans are a good choice, especially if you’re travelling as a couple. Almost all rental companies offer vehicles in this size range, primarily campervans. In most cases, they have limited kitchen facilities, sometimes located in the boot. The interior layout is generally functional, and seating areas can be quickly converted into sleeping areas in just a few simple steps.

Family motorhomes

These are the perfect vehicles for groups of three to six people: Family-friendly motorhomes. In many cases, they are between 22 and 32 feet in length (approx. 6 to 7 m), and often feature an alcove above the driver’s cab. As well as plenty of storage space, most vehicles of this size feature extensive kitchen facilities and a shower with a toilet. Beds are often integrated both in the rear and in the alcove. In addition, the seating in the central area can be converted into beds.

Luxury RVs

Some resemble tour buses: Luxury RVs—usually referred to as A-Class motorhomes—are particularly common in North America. With their large dimensions, they seem capable of transporting half a household’s furnishings along the wide roads. Some of these vehicles even feature extendable slide-outs, which provide even more space at the campsite. The fittings are generally of a particularly high standard.

Tips for travelling in a campervan

Before setting off on a campervan adventure, it is worth taking some time to prepare. A little planning in advance can save you considerable time and stress once you are on the road, while still leaving plenty of room for spontaneity. When planning your route, for example, it can be helpful to research campsites along the way and identify suitable places to stay. It is also worth considering where and when you will stock up on food and other essentials. In remote destinations such as Alaska, the Australian Outback or Canada’s Northwest Territories, the nearest supermarket or petrol station can sometimes be hundreds of miles away. To help you prepare, our articles provide useful information, practical tips and destination-specific advice on everything from route planning and campsites to sights and activities.

Route planning

Nowadays, a wide variety of online services (such as ‘Google Maps’) allow for precise route planning. You can view the journey time between different locations, as well as campsites, petrol stations, supermarkets and restaurants. This means you can plan your motorhome road trip with great precision. Tip: Allow plenty of time so that you aren’t stressed out by minor or major delays. For longer journeys, make sure to plan in the odd stop along the way. It is also worth checking any ferry crossings you may need to take. In some regions, particularly in North America, certain ferry services operate only during specific seasons. Check timetables and routes again a few days before setting off.

Campsites

If you’ve already picked out a few campsites along your route, book them early. Popular spots fill up fast—especially during peak summer months—and scrambling for a last-minute alternative can be a real headache. Smaller, privately owned sites offer another alternative. Facilities are typically minimal, often restricted to simple tarmac or gravel spots, but they frequently feature scenic surroundings and easy city access.
