Rent a motorhome first, then discover Switzerland

Experience Switzerland by motorhome

Anyone looking for the perfect holiday destination with a motorhome will almost inevitably end up in Switzerland at some point during their research. At least if the starting point of the trip is in the centre of Europe. The dreamlike landscapes in the Alps, historic towns and lakes ensure that motorhome hire is popular throughout Switzerland. More than fifty thousand campsites spread across the entire country speak for themselves. Especially when you consider that the country as a whole is rather compact in size, the variety of landscapes in Switzerland is incredible. Many small and large towns are worthwhile destinations. For example, it is worth spending a day or two in Zurich before picking up your motorhome or after dropping off your vehicle. The city in the north of the country can be reached relatively quickly from all rental stations within Switzerland. Of course, it is also possible to travel to Switzerland from a neighbouring country, such as Germany or France. Some of the most beautiful routes for motorhome holidays lead directly over breathtaking mountain passes. These are not particularly long, sometimes even shorter than thirty kilometres. However, the passes offer breathtaking and unique views. What's more, in the vast majority of cases they are toll-free and can therefore be travelled for free. The one or other stopover provides the views for which Switzerland is so famous. A few small camping sites at hotels ensure that motorhome holidaymakers can set up camp for the night. Not far from the Grimsel Pass is the Nufenen Pass - also located in the Bernese Alps. It offers perhaps the best view of the region's four-thousand-metre peaks. Depending on which mountain passes the motorhome tour is to cross, all information on the relevant routes should be obtained before starting the journey. Due to the sometimes long winter, some mountain passes are only accessible between May and September, others between July and October, for example. In general, the regional weather conditions should be taken into account before hiring a motorhome in Switzerland. Depending on the region - especially in the Alps - snow-covered or icy roads may already be lurking at the end of September or in October.

🚐 Why start here?

  • Alpine hub: You're at the perfect crossroads: westwards into the Rhone Valley, eastwards into rustic Goms or southwards over the pass to Italy.
  • Sunny side: Valais is known for its dry climate & 300 days of sunshine a year - ideal conditions for campers.
  • Culture start: Visit the Stockalper Palace, the most important baroque building in Switzerland, right in the city before setting off.

📍 Destinations within striking distance

  • Aletsch Glacier: The largest glacier in the Alps (UNESCO World Heritage Site) is practically on your doorstep. Travel to the valley stations & take the gondola to the eternal ice.
  • Zermatt & Matterhorn: Drive into the Mattertal valley to Täsch (there are campsites there) and take the shuttle from there to the most famous mountain in the world.
