Experience Romania by motorhome
The Transfãgărășan, one of the most spectacular roads in Europe, which winds its way through the Carpathian Mountains, is particularly popular with motorhome travellers. The route offers breathtaking views of rugged peaks, deep blue lakes and lush forests. The Carpathians are a true paradise for nature lovers: Here you can hike, climb, cycle or simply enjoy the peace and quiet in many places.
Romania's historic cities, such as Sibiu, Brașov and Sighisoara, are also worth a visit. With their well-preserved medieval town centres, colourful houses and charming alleyways, they offer a fascinating insight into the country's past. And of course, a visit to Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is a must. The city combines historic buildings with modern architecture and offers a lively nightlife.
Wild camping is permitted in many regions of Romania - even with a motorhome - which adds to the freedom of travelling. As fewer and fewer countries allow wild camping with a campervan, Romania is now an exception in this case. However, you should inform yourself in advance about the applicable rules in order to protect nature. For example, wild camping is prohibited in national parks and nature reserves.
Romanian cuisine is varied and flavoursome, with influences from Turkish, Hungarian and Slavic cuisine. Traditional dishes such as sarmale (stuffed cabbage leaves) and mici (grilled meat rolls) are particularly recommended.

Bucharest: Paris of the East & Gateway to the Carpathians
Bucharest is loud, dynamic & full of contrasts. Here, the French charm of the old city centre meets the gigantic architecture of the communist era. The perfect starting point to conquer Transylvania & the wild Carpathian Mountains.
🚐 Why start here?
- Hub: Otopeni Airport is the main gateway to Romania. Pick up the camper & head straight for the mountains without necessarily getting stuck in heavy city traffic. Price-performance: Take advantage of the favourable prices in the capital to load your camper to the brim with provisions before heading out into nature.
- Sightseeing: Marvel at the Palace of Parliament (the second largest administrative building in the world) before heading off into the wilderness.
📍 Destinations within striking distance
- Sinaia & Peleș Castle: Just over two hours north lies the former royal summer residence - one of the most beautiful castles in Europe at the foot of the mountains.
- Transfăgărășan: Often referred to as the "most beautiful road in the world", the pass road leads spectacularly through the Carpathian Mountains (only open in summer!).
- Bran Castle: Anyone camping in Romania must visit the "Dracula Castle". Touristy, but an absolute must-see programme on the edge of Transylvania.
- Mud Volcanoes of Berca: A bizarre lunar landscape north-east of Bucharest that is perfect for an extraordinary photo stop.
👥 Ideal for...
- Explorers: Romania is still wild & unspoilt - perfect for anyone looking for adventure off the beaten track.
- Nature lovers: The Carpathian Mountains offer unspoilt primeval forests & the largest brown bear population in Europe.
- Budget travellers: Camping, food & fuel are often cheaper here than in Western Europe.
