Enjoy Italy by motorhome

Experience Italy by motorhome

Italy is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. There are many reasons for this. On the one hand, of course, there is the weather and the fantastic landscapes - often in coastal areas with dream beaches. On the other hand, Italy is popular because it offers ideal conditions for campervan holidays. The local infrastructure for motorhomes has been excellent for decades. The choice of campsites is correspondingly large. We reveal which places are particularly attractive when exploring Italy by motorhome. On the CU | Camper for Italy website, you can select different starting locations, hire companies and vehicle models. As one of the largest European countries, Italy is home to numerous sights, historic cities and varied landscapes. This becomes clear as soon as you choose the starting point for your motorhome holiday. Motorhomes can be picked up at several hire stations spread throughout the country. Between the northernmost station (near Venice) and the southernmost station (Randazzo near Catania in Sicily), Italy stretches out in all its facets. There is also a rental station on the island of Sardinia. The best conditions for experiencing Italy's most beautiful landscapes in a motorhome. As soon as you have decided which region you want to start your tour in, you can plan which of the country's sights should be on the programme. The choice could hardly be greater. The cosmopolitan city of Rome, with the Vatican, the Colosseum and Castel Sant'Angelo, is enough to warrant a visit lasting several days. The legendary city of Venice is no less worth a visit. The Doge's Palace or St Mark's Square are sights that should not be missed on any visit to Venice, as is a gondola ride along the city's canals. The fashion metropolis of Milan is also home to numerous attractions, including the majestic and imposing Duomo. Pisa has gained worldwide fame for its leaning tower, Florence with its cathedral is considered the cradle of the Renaissance and Naples with its time-honoured Castel Nuovo is also a popular city to visit. Another special feature of Naples is the nearby volcano Vesuvius. Winding roads lead up to the 1,300 metre high mountain, from where you can enjoy a unique view of the Gulf of Naples. All of these cities are perfect places to explore Italy's culture, architecture and cuisine. It should be noted that the best way to get around in these cities is by public transport. If possible, you should not drive a motorhome in the metropolises. Fortunately, there are several campsites in and near the respective cities where you can park your vehicle for one or more days to explore the places. Anyone travelling through Italy in a motorhome can therefore enjoy a stay in the cities before, during or after the tour. Whether it's Tuscany with its rolling hills, the almost Caribbean flair of Sardinia or the Alpine panoramas in South Tyrol - the country is home to a wide variety of scenery. The Mediterranean coastline is dotted with almost endless small towns - and countless campsites. One particularly fascinating section of the coast is the Cinque Terre National Park not far from Genoa. The hilly landscape is populated by small villages, whose colourful little houses make a first-class postcard motif. Hiking trails along the coast offer perfect vantage points. Lake Garda is also a dream for anyone travelling through Italy in a motorhome. Located in northern Italy, it is the largest lake in the country and is particularly easy to reach from Milan. The region offers the best conditions for campers - numerous excursion destinations, such as amusement parks or the surrounding mountains, attract holidaymakers from all over the world.

Rome: Ancient World Stage & the Heart of the Boot

Rome is overwhelming, loud & beautiful - one big open-air museum. The "Eternal City" offers you perhaps the most culturally rich starting point in Europe. But as soon as you take over the camper & leave the motorway ring road (GRA) behind you, the true heart of Italy opens up to you: a mixture of volcanic lakes, Etruscan hills & wild mountain massifs that are often overlooked in the shadow of the famous capital.

🚐 Why start here?

  • Culture shock (the good kind): Take advantage of the excellent campsites on the outskirts of the city (often with shuttle service) to explore the Colosseum, St Peter's Basilica & the Roman Forum before retreating into nature. You start your road trip in the centre of world history, so to speak.
  • Strategic centre: Rome is perfectly central. You have absolute freedom: to the north to gentle Tuscany & green Umbria, to the east to wild Abruzzo or to the south towards the Amalfi Coast & Naples.
  • A year-round destination: While it is already getting chilly in the north of Italy, you can often still enjoy mild late autumn days or a very early spring in Rome & Lazio - ideal for campers who want to escape the cold.

📍 Destinations within striking distance

  • Castelli Romani: The "Roman Castles" in the Alban Hills are just a short drive south-east of the city. Relax at the volcanic lakes (Lago di Albano & Lago di Nemi), visit the Pope's summer residence in Castel Gandolfo & enjoy the famous "porchetta" (suckling pig) directly from the street stall in Ariccia.
  • Saturnia & the Maremma: Drive approx. 2.5 hours north along the Via Aurelia. The famous "Cascate del Mulino" in Saturnia await you here - natural, hot sinter terraces where you can bathe (for free!). An absolute highlight for any camper trip.
  • Campo Imperatore (Abruzzo): If you're looking for solitude, head east to the Gran Sasso massif. The high plateau is often referred to as "Little Tibet". It is a dramatic, vast steppe landscape at an altitude of almost 2000 metres, which has often served as a film set (including for Bud Spencer films). Here you will find pure wilderness & the best arrosticini (mutton kebabs) in Italy.
  • Sperlonga & Riviera di Ulisse: On the way south, you will come across Sperlonga, a whitewashed coastal town perched on a rocky outcrop. The beaches here are among the cleanest in the region & the excavations of the villa of Emperor Tiberius are located right by the sea.

👥 Ideal for...

  • History junkies: Nowhere else can you walk in the footsteps of Caesars & gladiators and sleep in your own bed at night.
  • Off-season campers: Lazio is a dream in May or October - emptier, cheaper & climatically more pleasant than in high summer.
  • Off-season campers: You want mountains (Abruzzo), rolling hills (Tuscany/Umbria) & sea (Tyrrhenian Sea) in one holiday? Rome is your starting block.
