Explore Sweden's most beautiful regions by motorhome

Experience Sweden by motorhome

Northern Europe is particularly popular with motorhome holidaymakers. The unspoilt nature, with its unique landscapes, attracts holidaymakers from all over the world. It is therefore not surprising that many people want to explore Sweden by motorhome. You can book a motorhome in Sweden online via the CU | Camper website. The giant among the Scandinavian countries offers a good infrastructure and a generally high quality of life in addition to the aforementioned natural sights. The opportunity to experience remote and natural regions is correspondingly great. Even during the typical holiday periods, tourists are usually very well distributed throughout the country. To see Sweden's many advantages for yourself, it is a good idea to focus on one region of the country. First and foremost, the capital Stockholm is an ideal starting point and destination. The city is not only easy to reach by plane. It is a highlight in itself and can easily be explored in two or three days. Due to its location, tours through southern or central Sweden are ideal for anyone who wants to spend a week or two travelling by motorhome. If you want to explore the even more unspoilt north of the country, you should plan two weeks as an absolute minimum for your trip. An absolute classic for all those travelling Sweden by motorhome is a route along the south coast. Starting in Stockholm, the route initially runs along the south-east coast. Either via Linköping or Västervik, the route leads to Kalmar. From there, you can head for the large city of Malmö or the smaller town of Kristianstad. The route then heads back north - but this time along the west coast of the country. The route finally leads back to the capital via Halmstad and Gothenburg. In total, the route covers between 1,200 and 1,600 kilometres, depending on individual variations. At least ten to fourteen days should be planned in order to achieve a certain degree of relaxation and not just spend every day on the roads. Those who prefer a slightly shorter route and want to explore some of Sweden's most attractive lakes can travel around Vättern and Vänern. These bodies of water are around three hours' drive from Stockholm. Cities such as Karlstad or Jönköping are located directly on the lakes and thus offer the opportunity to combine experiencing nature and exploring historic cities. There are almost one hundred thousand lakes in the country - many of them in central and northern Sweden. The choice of exactly where to go with the motorhome is correspondingly large. One of the great advantages: In many places in Sweden, there are marked parking areas at the side of the road where you can spontaneously park your vehicle for up to 24 hours. In general, the Swedes are very friendly towards motorhome holidaymakers. As everywhere else, you should make sure that when wild camping (in the marked areas) you leave the pitch as clean and undamaged as you found it.

Stockholm: Start in the Venice of the North

Stockholm is one of the most elegant capital cities in the world, built on 14 islands. For motorhome travellers, the Swedish metropolis is the ideal starting point for exploring the vastness of Scandinavia, the archipelago coast & the deep forests.

🚐 Why start here?

  • Strategic location: Most rental companys are located close to Arlanda Airport. This means you are north of the city centre & can head straight into nature without traffic jams.
  • Everyone's right: Sweden is a camper's dream. From Stockholm you are immediately in regions where the "Allemansrätten" gives you a lot of freedom in nature.
  • Island feeling: You can experience the unique archipelago flair even before you really hit the road.

📍 Destinations within striking distance

  • Sigtuna: Sweden's oldest city is just a few minutes from the airport. Cobblestones, wooden houses & rune stones - the perfect first stop.
  • Uppsala: Take a short drive north to the famous university city with its mighty cathedral & the historic burial mounds of Gamla Uppsala.
  • Gripsholm Castle: A must for Tucholsky fans & romantics. The fairytale castle on Lake Mälaren in Mariefred is pure postcard Sweden.
  • Trosa: An idyllic coastal town south of Stockholm, often referred to as the "end of the world" & the location of many Inga Lindström films.

👥 Ideal for...

  • Families: In the footsteps of Pippi Longstocking & Michel - Stockholm is the start to a children's book paradise.
  • Design lovers: Before heading into the forest, Stockholm beckons with first-class Scandinavian design & architecture.
  • Nature campers: The combination of countless lakes, forests & the coast makes the region around Mälardalen extremely varied.
