Constance: Alpine view & Mediterranean flair
Constance is the unofficial capital of Lake Constance. Here, German half-timbered houses meet Swiss mountains & student nonchalance meets 2000 years of history. Start your road trip right on the border, where the Rhine leaves the lake, the water shimmers turquoise & you can almost touch the Alps when the foehn blows.
🚐 Why start here?
- Grenz-Genial: You start right on the Swiss border (Kreuzlingen is practically intertwined with Constance). The journey to the Swiss Alps or further towards Italy is extremely short from here.
- Ferry start: Take the car ferry from Constance-Staad to Meersburg (leaves every 15 minutes). This not only saves kilometres around the lake, but also feels like a mini-cruise to start your holiday - Alpine panorama included.
- Water vibe: The lakeside promenade, the harbour with the rotating "Imperia" statue & the "Hörnle" (the most popular lido) immediately put you in holiday mode before you've even driven the first kilometre.
📍 Destinations within striking distance
- Mainau Island: The famous "flower island" is just outside the city. A tropical paradise with a butterfly house, palm trees & giant sequoia trees - park the camper & enjoy the splendour of the flowers.
- Rhine Falls of Schaffhausen: Just half an hour to the west (in Switzerland) is the largest waterfall in Europe. A gigantic natural spectacle that you can hear before you see it.
- Säntis (Schwägalp): Drive over to Switzerland (note the vignette!) to the valley station of the Säntis railway. The 2,502 metre-high mountain dominates the skyline of Lake Constance & offers a view over six countries from the top.
- Stein am Rhein: One of the most beautiful medieval towns in the world, right where the Rhine leaves the Untersee. The artistically painted facades on the town hall square are world-famous.
👥 Ideal for...
- Swiss explorers: If you love the Alps but still want to shop & start at German prices, this is the place for you.
- Biking & swimming: The Lake Constance cycle path runs right through the town & the water is wonderfully refreshing in summer.
- Culture fans: From the Council building (where a pope was once elected) to the UNESCO World Heritage island of Reichenau (vegetables & monasteries), the density of history is enormous.
