Passau: City of three rivers & gateway to the wild forest
Passau is a spectacularly unique city on the map. Where the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers flow together from three directions, an old town with Italian baroque flair was created, which is often referred to as the "Venice of Bavaria". Here you start your holiday at the crossroads of cultures - strategically located between the primeval forest of the Bavarian Forest, the Austrian Danube Valley & the Bohemian neighbour.
🚐 Why start here?
- The water spectacle: Before you start, go to the "Three Rivers Corner". It's fascinating to see how the blue water of the Danube, the green of the Inn (which is wider than the Danube here!) & the black of the Ilz mix. A magical start to the journey.
- Strategic gateway: Passau is the ultimate springboard. You have the A3 motorway at your back for the journey, but ahead of you are the open roads towards Vienna, Hungary or Croatia - as well as the wild routes into the Bohemian Forest.
- City & nature: You can stroll through one of the most beautiful baroque old towns in Germany in the morning (and visit the cathedral with the largest cathedral organ in the world) & be deep in the Bavarian Forest National Park by lunchtime.
📍 Destinations within striking distance
- Bavarian Forest National Park: Just 45 minutes to the north, you can immerse yourself in the largest forest landscape in Central Europe. Highlights include the animal enclosure near Neuschönau (lynxes & bears!) & the spectacular treetop trail, which takes you spiralling over the treetops.
- Schlögener Schlinge (Austria): Cycle along the Danube over the border to Upper Austria (approx. 40 km). Here, the huge river makes an incredible 180-degree bend. From the "Schlögener Blick" viewpoint, you have the perfect panoramic photo.
- Český Krumlov (Krumau): Head north across the border to the Czech Republic. In just over 1.5 hours, you will reach this UNESCO World Heritage city on the Vltava River, which looks like a fairytale setting. The campsites are often located directly on the river - perfect for canoeists.
- Bath triangle: If you are looking for relaxation, head to Bad Füssing, Bad Griesbach or Bad Birnbach (approx. 30 min). The region offers huge thermal spas & excellent 5-star campsites ("camping wellness").
👥 Ideal for...
- Danube lovers: The classic starting point for following Europe's second longest river towards the Black Sea.
- Border crossers: Breakfast in Germany, lunch in Austria, dinner in the Czech Republic - no problem here.
- Hikers & cyclists: The Bavarian Forest & the Danube cycle path are right on your doorstep.
