Discover South Africa's most beautiful places by motorhome

Experience South Africa by motorhome

Whether it's a safari, across the cities or along the coast - for example on the Garden Route: South Africa's different sides have something to offer for pretty much every holiday wish. Fantastic beaches spread across the whole country provide almost paradisiacal opportunities to relax by the sea. If you are looking for a more active holiday, tours and hikes through various national parks, such as the Kruger National Park, are well worthwhile. But many other natural sights are also worth visiting for one or two days each. These include the Drakensberg Mountains, the legendary Cape of Good Hope and Cape Town's "local mountain". Table Mountain should definitely be explored if the metropolis is on your itinerary. Fantastic views of the city and the sea reward the climb. The ideal way to explore South Africa in a motorhome is without too much time pressure. As is so often the case when travelling, it is a great way to get to know a country if you let yourself drift and experience the country and its people at your own pace. Therefore, make sure you don't take on too much for the time you have planned. Otherwise, the range of landscapes worth seeing and the country's two dozen or so national parks can quickly become overwhelming.

Johannesburg: Your start into wild Africa

Johannesburg (or "Jozi") is the pulsating engine of South Africa & the continent's most important transport hub. From here, you don't set off for the beach, but straight into the bush - to the "Big Five" & the most spectacular landscapes in the north.

🚐 Why start here?

  • Logistics: O.R. Tambo International Airport is the main gateway for long-haul travellers. You land, pick up the camper & are immediately mobile.
  • Gateway: It is the best strategic point to reach the world-famous Kruger National Park or the neighbouring countries of Botswana & Namibia.
  • Supplies: Use the huge malls to load up your camper with biltong, braai wood & supplies before heading into the wilderness.

📍 Destinations within striking distance

  • Kruger National Park: In about 5 hours you can reach one of the largest game reserves in the world. Self-driving here is easy & an unforgettable adventure.
  • Panorama Route: On the way to Kruger, you drive along the Blyde River Canyon - including highlights such as God's Window & the Three Rondavels.
  • Pilanesberg: A malaria-free alternative to Kruger, located in an extinct volcanic crater & just over 2 hours away.
  • Drakensberg: Head south to the majestic "Dragon Mountains" - a UNESCO World Heritage Site & hiker's paradise with epic scenery.

👥 Ideal for...

  • Animal watchers: If you want to see lions, elephants & leopards in the wild, you have to start in Joburg.
  • Adventurers: The "bush vibe" starts here immediately after the city limits.
  • Photographers: The green gorges of the Panorama Route & the red earth in the bush offer dramatic contrasts.
