Experience Portugal by motorhome
There are many reasons to travel to Portugal. The country in Europe's south-west has become more than just a holiday insider tip in recent years. The sunny terrain attracts visitors with its numerous beaches and historic cities. The country's excellent cuisine is also the non plus ultra for many. Below, we reveal what not to miss on a tour of the country and how to experience Portugal with a campervan. You can book the right campervan in Portugal online via CU | Camper.
Let's start with the regional conditions that need to be taken into account when planning your trip.
Porto is one of these locations in the north of the country. The picturesque harbour metropolis with its old town is well worth a visit and should be explored for two or three days before or after the tour. A culinary recommendation that any Portuguese would probably give you: Wine connoisseurs should not miss out on sampling a glass of port wine in Porto.
If you would rather explore the centre of Portugal with your camper than the north of the country, you can choose either the rental station in Coimbra or Lisbon. The capital of Portugal - just like Porto - is predestined for a closer look during a visit lasting several days. A tour on the tram should be planned in, as should a stopover in Bairro Alto. The neighbourhood is famous for its numerous restaurants and bars and is a popular place to go both during the day and in the evening. The city also has everything else a holidaymaker could wish for: shopping opportunities, cultural attractions and museums as well as regular and unique events.
The fourth option for picking up a campervan in Portugal is in the south of the country. Almancil is a small town in the Algarve that is a worthwhile starting point for anyone wishing to explore perhaps the most Mediterranean part of the country. The coastal region around Sagres is particularly worth mentioning. Steep cliffs provide spectacular views.
For example, the unique town of Sintra to the west of Lisbon. The town around the Palácio Nacional da Pena seems to have come straight out of a fairy tale and is absolutely worth a visit. Not far from the city is another attraction - the most westerly point in Europe. Cabo da Roca is located in a scenic coastal area and can be climbed via hiking trails.
Another advantage of Portugal: there are excellent conditions for surfing along practically the entire Atlantic coast. No wonder that both locals and holidaymakers regularly seek out the pleasure of the waves. The country can also be recommended across the board when it comes to food. Fish is something like the national dish of the Portuguese - and is therefore highly recommended in thousands of restaurants in the country.

Porto: charm, character & the wild north
Porto is much more than just Lisbon's little sister. The city on the Douro exudes a raw, authentic romance with its blue tiles (azulejos), the spectacular Dom Luís I bridge & the scent of port wine in the air. It is the perfect starting point to discover the original, green Portugal ("Costa Verde"), experience culinary highlights & drive one of the most beautiful roads in the world.
🚐 Why start here?
- Gateway to the "real" Portugal: While the south is often characterised by tourism, here in the north you can still experience deeply rooted traditions. You take over the campervan & are right in the middle of it all - between winegrowers, fishermen & granite villages. Logistics & location: Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is modern, well organised and conveniently located north of the city. This means that you can pick up your camper and head directly north or inland without having to struggle through the bottleneck of the city centre.
- The legendary N222: Porto is the gateway to Estrada Nacional 222, a road that runs along the south bank of the Douro & has already been named the "best road in the world" for its perfect bends & breathtaking views - a dream for any road trip fan.
📍 Destinations within striking distance
- Alto Douro wine region: Travel upriver deep into the heart of port wine. The landscape changes dramatically from green to rugged, dominated by spectacular terraced vineyards that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Visit a "quinta" (winery) in Pinhão & spend the night right on the riverbank.
- Peneda-Gerês National Park: About an hour to the north-east is Portugal's only national park. Here you will find a rugged wilderness of granite rocks, dense oak forests & crystal-clear waterfalls (such as the Cascata do Arado). With a bit of luck, you may encounter wild Garrano horses or find ancient Roman milestones.
- Braga & Guimarães: Two historical heavyweights in the north. Guimarães is considered the "cradle of the nation" with a proud castle. In Braga, you must visit the pilgrimage church Bom Jesus do Monte - the famous zig-zag baroque staircase is an architectural masterpiece & a magnificent photo motif.
- Aveiro & Costa Nova: Travel a little south to the lagoon of Aveiro, the "Venice of Portugal". The colourful Moliceiro boats are beautiful to look at, but the highlight for campers is Costa Nova with its iconic, colourfully striped wooden houses right on the Atlantic beach.
👥 Ideal for...
- Enjoyment campers: The density of culinary experiences is enormous - from the hearty "Francesinha" (Porto's mighty sandwich) to fresh fish in Matosinhos and first-class wine tastings in the Douro Valley.
- Surfers & vanlifers: The coast south of Porto (e.g. Esmoriz or Espinho) offers constant Atlantic swells & relaxed pitches that are less crowded than in the Algarve.
- Culture lovers: If you want to experience history not just in a museum but alive on the street, you'll love the atmosphere in the alleyways of Ribeira & the villages of Minho.
