Discover Norway by motorhome

Experience Norway by motorhome

Hardly any other country in Europe is as famous for its scenic beauty as Norway. The Scandinavian country attracts many holidaymakers who want to discover Norway by boat, car or motorhome. A total of five pick-up and drop-off points for campervans within the country ensure that this is possible without any problems. You can book a campervan in Norway conveniently online via CU | Camper. In the following, we reveal which highlights should not be missed on a motorhome tour in Norway. Nevertheless, the country's infrastructure is excellent. The road network is particularly favourable for motorhome drivers. Special features include the many tunnels, which are often between five and ten kilometres long. Or the numerous ferries, one of which you are sure to try out on a tour of Norway. The fees for ferry crossings in particular - and also for tolls for possible bridge crossings - should be taken into account in advance when planning your travel budget. These are often based on the weight or length of the vehicle. In addition to the budget, the itinerary should of course also be well planned in advance. Due to the size of the country and the diversity of its landscapes, it is not advisable to explore the entire country on a two- or three-week tour. Instead, it makes more sense to discover Norway's regions bit by bit in a motorhome. These can be roughly divided into three areas: Southern Norway, Central Norway and Northern Norway. While the south of the country is characterised by long beaches and small, dreamy villages, the centre and west of the country is characterised by its diverse landscape. Central Norway, also known as Fjord Norway, has a particularly large number of fjords that attract holidaymakers from all over the world. Between Bergen and Trondheim are many of the most famous. The Geirangerfjord, for example, winds its way through the landscape for fifteen kilometres and offers unique views. There are also incredible views along the Sognefjord. At around two hundred kilometres long, it is also the longest fjord in the country and the second longest in the world. Further north in Norway, nature is still particularly unspoilt. Nevertheless, the road network there is also suitable for motorhomes. If you want to visit the North Cape, you should definitely plan a tour lasting several weeks. It takes a long time to drive from the south or west to the northernmost point of Norway with its famous globe. However, this is sweetened - as it feels everywhere in Norway - by the unique landscapes that pass by.

Tromsø: Gateway to the Arctic & Paris of the North

Tromsø is where Arctic wilderness meets vibrant urban culture. Situated 350 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, you start your camper trip in the epicenter of the Northern Lights. There is no "night" in summer & no "day" in deep winter here – only magical light. Pick up your vehicle near the Arctic Cathedral & set off for islands that rise like dragon's teeth from the sea and fjords that cut deep blue into the glaciers.

🚐 Why start here?

  • Capital of Light: Tromsø lies right in the middle of the Aurora Oval. The chances of seeing the Northern Lights dancing directly above your camper are among the highest in the world (September to April). In summer, on the other hand, you enjoy the Midnight Sun – 24 hours of daylight for endless road trips.
  • Island Hopping: The city is the perfect strategic hub. You don't have to choose one direction: To the west wait the wild islands of Kvaløya & Senja, to the east the majestic Lyngen Alps.
  • Civilization & Wilderness: Stock up on top-class equipment & food in the city. As soon as you cross the bridge, you are in raw nature, where reindeer often stop traffic.

📍 Destinations within reach

  • Senja Island: Often referred to as "Norway in miniature." The drive takes you to dramatic peaks like the "Segla" & the spectacular Bergsbotn viewing platform. The roads are narrow, but the view is worth every meter.
  • Sommarøy: The "Arctic Caribbean" is just an hour west. Here you will find white coral sand beaches & turquoise water. A surreal sight against snow-capped mountains – and a dream spot for campers.
  • Lyngen Alps: Drive east to this massive mountain range that shoots 1,800 meters straight up from the fjord. A paradise for hikers in summer & ski tourers in winter. The "Blåvatnet" (Blue Lake) hike is a highlight.
  • Kvaløya: The "Whale Island" is right on your doorstep. In winter, orcas & humpback whales migrate into the fjords (Kaldfjord), which you can often see even from the shore (or your camper window!).

👥 Ideal for...

  • Aurora Hunters: Anyone looking for the green light must start here. The infrastructure for winter camping is excellent.
  • Photographers: The lighting conditions, the bridges & the jagged mountains offer motifs found nowhere else.
  • Adventurers: Whether dog sledding, whale watching, or peak bagging – the adrenaline level stays high here.
