How to grab a “driveaway” & travel for less

If you’re looking for an exciting, budget-friendly experience in a brand-new campervan, and you’re open to a flexible schedule and a one-way route, then a run-of-fleet transfer might just be the thing for you.

These trips are becoming increasingly popular because they offer a slightly different experience than a regular motorhome rental, as you get the thrill of driving a new vehicle. This often comes with a much lower price tag (often 30% to 40%), simply because you’re helping the rental company move new inventory.

How it works

Every year, a number of brand-new campervans roll off the production lines, primarily in manufacturing hubs around the Midwest. These vehicles need to get to rental depots in major tourist hot spots like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and Orlando.

These run-of-fleet transfers typically open for booking in late summer or autumn for travel the following spring. It is the perfect opportunity to plan an epic one-way road trip across the US.

Where will you go?

Here is a taste of what awaits you at the most common start and end points.

The starting line

This is where your run-of-fleet transfer adventure kicks off.

Chicago, Illinois

Before you hit the road, take a selfie at “The Bean” in Millennium Park and soak in the panoramic views from the Willis Tower.

Stroll along Lake Michigan or drive a short stretch along Route 66, as it is the official starting point of the “Mother Road”.

The destinations (just a few examples)

Drop-off locations are typically major travel hubs where rental demand is high. These cities often offer excellent flight connections, plenty of accommodation options, and no shortage of iconic sights.

Drive across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and explore North Beach, the city’s historic “Little Italy”.

Take a ride on a classic cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf, or take a ferry to Alcatraz Island.

 Las Vegas, Nevada

The neon lights of the Strip are calling. Watch the Bellagio Fountains dance, or marvel at The Sphere—the newest, massive addition to the skyline. For a nature break, drive just 20 minutes west to Red Rock Canyon for a scenic loop through red sandstone peaks.

Los Angeles, California

Cruise down to the Santa Monica Pier and soak up the vibes at Venice Beach.

Head up to the Griffith Observatory for the best views of the city and the Hollywood Sign, or stroll the Walk of Fame before diving into LA’s incredible food scene.

Orlando, Florida

The theme park capital of the world. It is the perfect place to end a road trip with a few days of magic at Disney World or Universal Studios.

New York City, New York

If your drop-off is near the Big Apple, walk through the massive expanse of Central Park. Visit “The Edge” at Hudson Yards for the highest outdoor sky deck in the hemisphere.

Don’t miss the free Staten Island Ferry for close-ups of the Statue of Liberty, and be sure to grab a “New York Slice” or a bagel smothered in cream cheese.

Seattle, Washington

Visit the Space Needle and ride the Great Wheel on the waterfront. Walk through the Olympic Sculpture Park (it’s free!) or head to Kerry Park for an incredible view of the skyline with Mount Rainier looming in the background.

The Benefits

Why choose a transfer over a standard rental?

• Brand new vehicle: You are likely the first person to sleep in the bed or use the cooker and there is no wear and tear.
• One-way adventure: Because you don’t need to loop back to your starting point, every mile pushes you forward into new territory. You can cross entire climate zones and witness the landscape dramatically change day by day without ever seeing the same view twice.
• Price: It is the cheapest way to drive a luxury RV.
• Convenience: A free bus transfer is often included from your hotel to the depot where you collect your camper.

The “need to know”

Unlike a standard rental where you pick your exact vehicle and dates, a transfer requires a spirit of flexibility.

• Vehicle allocation (The “surprise” factor): You generally cannot choose your specific camper model. Vehicles are allocated based on what needs moving. You might get a compact van or a massive RV (don’t worry, they ensure it fits your number of travelers).
  You must be prepared to drive whatever you are given!
• Time limits: You have a specific window to complete the trip. However, operators like El Monte, Cruise, and Road Bear RV often offer generous timeframes (up to 4 weeks), allowing for a relaxed pace.
• Mileage: You typically receive a specific “free mileage” allowance sufficient to cover the direct route plus some sightseeing. Some deals even offer unlimited mileage!

Essential Costs

While the rental fee is low, remember to budget for:

• Fuel: American motorhomes are powerful beasts that drink a lot of fuel.
• Campsites: You will need to book RV parks or campsites along the way.
• Personal expenses: As with any trip, food, drink, and National Park entry fees are your responsibility.

Is this for you?

It IS for you if:

• You love the idea of driving a brand-new vehicle.
• You are adventurous and don’t mind the “mystery” of which model you’ll get.
• You are comfortable driving large vehicles.
• You are flexible with your travel dates (traveling in spring means some National Parks or campsites might still be closed).

It is NOT for you if:

• You are nervous about driving a large RV.
• You require a strict itinerary in peak summer when all attractions are guaranteed open.

Ultimately, the low cost and high mileage allowance are fantastic bonuses—but only if you are up for a bit of adventure!

Camper relocation

There is a similar option known as camper relocation. Unlike new vehicle transfers, these involve moving used campers. These relocations often happen when rental companies need to move fleets from wintry areas to warmer ones. The savings are similar, but the vehicles will have higher mileage and normal wear and tear.
