Russia is a country of superlatives – and of nature. At least outside the greater Moscow area. After all, this is the cultural centre of the country and is home to all kinds of sights that have been created by human hands over the centuries. An exploratory tour shows that there are also many sights worth seeing in the surrounding area of the city and in Russia in general. For all those who would like to experience Russia, especially in a motorhome, we have some tips and suggestions below.
First of all, the seemingly endless size of the country must be mentioned. If you look at the world map, you will quickly realise that Russia is by far the largest country on earth. Of course, this makes one dream – of vast, wild landscapes and road trips lasting several weeks or even months through the most diverse regions. For adventure holidaymakers, this is without question an attractive destination. Those who want to spend a more conventional motorhome holiday in Russia usually stay in the western parts of the country.
There are a total of forty national parks in Russia, spread throughout the country.
Some are far away from the capital – for example Siberia with its picturesque Lake Baikal more than five thousand kilometres away. However, those who start out from Moscow in a motorhome and are looking for fascinating landscapes will also find destinations closer by. Especially in contrast to the hustle and bustle of the big city, life can be enjoyed in the Lossiny Ostrov National Park, for example. It is not uncommon to discover impressive animals such as moose in the area, which is characterised by a lot of forest, rivers and hiking trails.
As a general rule, the further the tour takes you away from Moscow, the less populated the regions become. After a two- to three-hour drive, many lakes and unspoilt places can be found in practically all directions. Accordingly, anyone exploring Russia in a motorhome is likely to rely on an often-used but true saying: The journey is the goal!
